Running a red light is one of the most dangerous things a driver can do. Sadly, crashes caused by red-light runners remain a serious problem on our roads, despite my social media videos reminding drivers to be safer.
The Numbers Behind the Danger
- In 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated more than 39,000 traffic deaths nationwide. While that’s a slight drop from 2023, the numbers are still alarming.
- The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reports that about one-third of all deadly intersection crashes happen at intersections with traffic lights — many of these caused by red-light running.
- In 2023, over 1,000 people were killed and more than 136,000 were injured in red-light crashes, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Why Does It Keep Happening?
Distractions, impatience, or simply trying to “beat the light” can lead to devastating consequences for innocent drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Even though most drivers agree that running a red light is very dangerous, surveys show that more than 25% of drivers admit to doing it in the past month.
What Helps Prevent It?
- Paying Attention. If you are driving and the light changes from green to yellow, begin slowing down. You know it will turn red. If you are waiting at a red light and your light turns green, don’t just go. Look left, right, and straight ahead to make sure it is safe and that approaching cars have slowed and stopped. If you think they will run the light, don’t go. Only take off from a red to green light once you have determined it is safe.
- Not rushing. Take your time
