School Zones and Speed Laws in Louisiana

Summer is ending, and schools are starting back up. With that comes more responsibility for drivers. School zones have reduced speed limits during certain posted hours, and drivers must pay close attention—not all school zones are equipped with flashing yellow lights to indicate the times and speed reductions.

What Signs Should You Look For?

Generally, school zone speed limits are only active during the specific times posted on the signs at the beginning of each school zone. These signs also tell you, the driver, what the reduced speed is during that period.

Most school zones post specific times—such as 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Others may rely on flashing yellow lights to indicate when reduced speeds are in effect. Be careful: not all school zones have the same reduced speed limit.

What Happens If You Get Stopped?

Ignoring school zone speed limits can result in increased fines, higher insurance premiums, and even criminal charges if a crash occurs as a result of your speeding.

Why so strict? To protect children.

Penalties and Enforcement

You will face a higher fine if caught speeding in a school zone, both in Louisiana and in most other states. In Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, for example, you are required to appear in person in court. Some courts may suspend your license, add additional penalties, or even issue an arrest warrant if you fail to appear.

Fines and court costs typically start at around $240 and can increase depending on how far over the speed limit you were driving.

Louisiana law allows local municipal authorities to set their own speed limits and school zone schedules. This means fines and enforcement can vary between cities and parishes.

So, What Can You Do?

  • Pay Attention when driving near schools.
  • Be mindful of the time of day.
  • Look for posted signs — even if they don’t have flashing lights.
  • Follow the reduced speed limits during school zone hours.
  • It only takes a few extra seconds to slow down—but it can make all the difference in keeping children safe and staying on the right side of the law.
